Snowdon

Me at the summit of SnowdonSnowdon has a special place for me, as much as anything because for its size it can present one hell of a challenge when the weather turns for the worse (which invariably it does).

It’s the highest mountain in Wales at 1085m and has numerous good routes to the summit, apart from the train that takes you to the bottom of a small flight of steps to the summit… but I’ll leave it there.

When?

In near perfect weather (there were some showers, but come on, this is Wales!) in late April 2009 I walked/scrambled the Snowdon Horseshoe.

Other than that I’ve had to turn back twice recently trying for the top. Once in 2008, due to very strong winds on Crib Goch which meant a hasty retreat down the North Ridge back to the road and then in October 2008 when caught up in a severe weather warning we reached 150m below the summit before giving up and walking down the path (which resembled a waterfall).
